The Dr. Baros Guide
to NBCT Certification

Having successfully certified last year and now coaching my friends as they embark on this journey themselves, I'm reflecting on my journey and what I would tell myself two years ago about this process. I was lucky enough to have ample opportunities for support and feedback through conferences, workshops, my cohort, and networking, so I attribute my completion of all four components in one year largely to the amazing support - professionally and personally - that I ahve in my life.

It's been a wild ride. One piece of advice: Don't do all four components of NBCT AND complete your Ph.D. in the same year. Yet, one of my biggest frustrations with this process is that there are SO FEW World Language candidates, so it's hard to find like-area candidates to help you out!

To support others on this journey, I am writing a mini-series of blog posts about becoming NBCT certified, with some extra notes about completing this process in World Languages. I hope to share all the things I learned along the way, and especially the things I wish someone had told me up front. These come from my experiences provided by WEA (Washington Education Association), including my wonderful cohort leaders and members, as well as things I simply picked up from trial and error.

If you have any questions or feedback about this process or my thoughts, please do not hesitate to contact me!

Getting Familiar

Here's the 30,000-foot overview of what the NBCT process entails and what is expected of you. One of the most valuable things I learned from the WEA Jump Start program was how to set up my binder in order to organize my thinking. Get ready to run up your copy allotment (or head to your local copy store) because this is a MUST DO.
